MAPOLY BLACK WEEK FESTIVAL: POLICE HARASSMENT, 30 STUDENTS INJURED

The lingering crisis in Moshood Abiola Polytechnic-MAPOLY ( now MAUSTECH) deepens as students began day two (2)  of BLACK WEEK in the state capital, Abeokuta. The students who took over the street early hour on Tuesday, December 19, 2017, WP_20171219_11_16_17_Pro.jpgdemanded the commencement of their second-semester examination, disrupting the movement of vehicles and commuters. Having stayed home for three months, the angry students request an immediate action by the state government to have their school activities opened.

Speaking with our correspondent, one of the students opined that; “we supposed to have written our exam on September 18 but ASUP MAPOLY used that as a negotiation tool with the state government. For the past three months, we have not been able to write the examination”.

Meanwhile, another student posited that: “MAPOLY students are not violence-lovers, we are not here for violence. We have warned and given the state government enough time to see to our demands but nothing has been done to date.” He added that “we were at the governor’s office yesterday, but the governor refused to attend to us, rather, he sent one gubernatorial candidate known as Tolu Odebiyi which of course we have no business with. Chief Tolu was even trying to disrupt us, he ordered the security operatives to shoot us.

Some of the students who also spoke with newsmen have the Chief Security Officer of MAPOLY blame for the violence gesticulated and later led to roadblock and restriction of vehicles on Tuesday. “According to the students; “Our CSO is a traitor, a political godfather, and father to some. He started the problem going on right now. He has always being a problem to the students and just this morning, he injured more than three students at Iyana-Oloke and some were taken to Ibara police station all in the name of fighting for their rights. The police are also part of the problem, they lack the social interaction and deprive students of their rights. They shoot every here and there. But nothing can discourage us”.

Unfortunately, things got out of hand when the security operatives took over ibara, panseke, and agbeloba roads- shooting and arresting both students and passers-by. Some of the arrested innocents were severely beating while some were handled like notorious armed robbers.

The protest which lasted for hours was forcefully stopped at around quarter past twelve (12:15) in the afternoon by men of Nigeria police, mopol, civil defense and vigilante people.

The arrested students and the passers-by were later driven to ibara police station for proper treatment as others pledged never to give up until their demand received favourable attention from the state government.
